Stone Polishing Santa Barbara

We provide expert stone polishing in Santa Barbara. We use various polishing compounds and polishing pads to remove light surface scratches and mild etching from natural stone surfaces.

Periodic Stone Polishing

Any surface made with calcium carbonate (Marble, Travertine, and Limestone) requires periodic re-polishing if they have been in contact with alkaline or acidic products such as orange and lemon juices, cologne, toothpaste, etc. Other damages are created by heavy traffic, spills of chemicals, and other abuses.

Stone Polishing Process

The stone polishing process uses polishing compounds and polishing pads to restore brilliance and shine to stone surfaces. Different polishing compounds are used depending on the type of stone. Each type of polishing compound is used with a polishing machine and special polishing pads with water. Polishing pads can be made of soft or very hard fabric. By polishing at low speeds, the pads will spread the slurry made with the polishing compound and water. The heat created during the polishing process creates a beautiful shine on the stone surface.

Polishing Compound for Limestone, Marble, Travertine (Calcium Carbonate)

The polishing compound for these stones is comprised mainly of chemicals which react with the surface of the stone (calcium carbonate). The chemicals are embedded in a paste, powder, or cream that contains some mild acids such as Oxalic Acid. A highly glossy appearance is created as the chemical reacts with the stone surface.

Polishing Compound for Granite

A granite polishing compound is composed primarily of diamond powder. Granite is one of the hardest stones, and to effectively polish granite requires a polishing compound containing material harder than the stone itself. Diamond powder is used because diamond is the hardest naturally occurring substance.

Scratches in Stone

The resiliency of stone to scratches depends on the type of stone. Stones can only be scratched by materials which are harder than the stone itself. The hardness of any natural stone depends on the minerals which make up the stone. Exceptionally hard stones such as granite are more resistant to scratches than softer stones. Lighter surface scratches may be polished out of stone using a stone polishing compound and oils. Deeper etches in the stone may require some sanding to smooth the stone surface followed by a finishing treatment using compounds and oils.

Many homes in Santa Barbara have beautiful stone surfaces. Granite counter tops, marble bathroom floors, travertine kitchens - we’ve seen natural stone implemented in so many interesting ways. It is important to hire a stone care professional who is experienced with each type of natural stone so that the best method for polishing and repairing is used on your prized stone surface.
